Unit: Hopes and Dreams Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry The Secret Life of Bees Sue Monk Kid
You are part of a research team that is making and presenting a Wiki page to educate others about the Great Depression. For this project, you will be divided into small groups. Specific topics were chosen to provide information necessary to contextualize John Steinbeck’s influence and his novella, Of Mice and Men. Your group will be assigned ONE of these topics.
The novella Of Mice and Men depicts the lives of Lennie Small and George Milton. Many of Lennie and George’s experiences are based on the fact that they are migrant workers; therefore, you will be conducting research on the lives of migrant workers within the context of American life during the 1930s. You will also research this particular time period in American history.
We are also reading and discussing the play A Raisin in the Sun and the novel The Secret Life of Bees. A Raisin in the Sun is a story about the Younger family. The setting of the story is the 1950's when African American families had to deal with segregation. The Secret Life of Bees depicts the life of a young girl named Lilly whose black nanny, Rosealeen, insults three racists on her way into town to vote. The story takes place in South Carolina in 1964. The setting for both of these works is during a time of great racial inequality.
The knowledge that you will gain will give you insight into the author’s purpose for writing this work. You will have a better sense of the setting, characters, and themes within the text as well as a deeper understanding of our unit focus questions:
How are hopes and dreams shaped by culture?
What role do dreams play in an individual’s life?
You will include all of your research findings on your Wiki page. You will select at least 3 images during your research:
These images should be gathered from a reliable source (generally a database) which provides you with the appropriate information needed for your Works Consulted page.
Provide a caption under the picture (This should be the actual title of the picture, if provided, and a brief explanation of its connection to your topic)
Remember - a URL is NOT an appropriate citation for your picture.
Link to TWO websites:
This will provide your classmates with additional information if they wish to research your topic further.
These websites should be different than the ones you may have used for your research.
Text information:
This should be reliable and interesting information to convey an understanding of your research topic. Remember, your wiki page is what your classmates will use to gain knowledge of this topic. There should be a minimum of 5 facts incorporated into your text - that is the bare MINIMUM.
Your group will also be required to complete an annotated works consulted for your research. All of your research must be cited in proper MLA format, including the images. At least TWO of your sources must be from a book. You may find the images on databases or at the Library of Congress website. You may also use one internet source for information. You need to plan this out with your group and work collaboratively to create a complete and properly formatted Annotated Works Consulted. Every member must contribute sources and this will be submitted electronically using Noodletools. Each group member needs to contribute at least one picture, gather research from at least two sources (at least one must be a book.)
